The bodhi tree (also called the tree of enlightenment) is a sacred tree in Buddhism, since it is said to be the tree under which Buddha Siddhartha Gautama is said to have attained enlightenment. This tree is in fact the fig tree of the pagodas (sacred fig tree), or pipal, and its seeds are used to make malas. The seeds of pipal patina and take on a shiny appearance over time.
