The bodhi tree (also called the awakening tree) is a sacred tree in Buddhism, since it would be the tree under which the Buddha Siddhartha Gautama would have reached illumination. This tree is actually the pagodic fig tree (sacred fig), or pipal, and its seeds are used to make malas. The pipal seeds are skate and take on a shiny appearance over time.
