A prayer mill is an object of Buddhist ritual consisting of a cylinder (mill) filled with mantras (prayers) and rotating freely about an axis on which the mantra is wound. Each mill tower is considered a recitation of the mantra.
The prayer mill turns clockwise, which is the direction of reading the mantra. After a rotation, the power of the mantras activates and grants protection and merit (Punya). Symbolically, turning a prayer mill means "turning the wheel of Dharma," which describes the way Buddha taught.
