A prayer mill is a Buddhist ritual composed of a cylinder (castor) filled with mantras (prayers) and freely rotating around an axis on which the mantra is wound. Each mill tower is considered to be a recitation of the mantra.
The prayer mill turns in the direction of the hands of a watch, which is the meaning of reading the mantra. After a rotation, the power of mantras is active and gives protection and deserves (Punya). Symbolically, turning a prayer mill means "turning the wheel of the Dharma", which describes the way Buddha taught.
